About the course

This Level 2 Certificate in Hair and Makeup Artistry is aimed at adults, school leavers, beauty therapists or hairdressers who want to develop their hair and makeup skills and are looking to start a career as a makeup artist. From working in television and theatre to face-painting and photographic work, there is a demand for professionals who can provide creative hairdressing and makeup skills in a range of areas. This is the qualification that can take you to higher levels of study including university level. If you are a recent school leaver and you did not achieve a grade 4 GCSE in English and maths, you will need to complete either GCSE or Functional Skills at the appropriate level alongside the course.

You will explore the theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks. Mandatory topics encompass working in the makeup industry, anatomy and physiology, researching, developing, and showcasing designs, the art of applying makeup, hair artistry, and creative makeup artistry.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to complete an initial assessment for Level 1 English, GCSE grade 3 or above in English language or Entry Level 3 or above in Functional Skills.

Where can I progress next?

Successful completion of this qualification opens avenues for employment as a makeup artist in various settings, including photo shoots, magazine and publication shoots, department stores, and salons. To further boost your career prospects, you may advance to the Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, and Media Makeup.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. How will you learn?

You will train in our purpose built makeup studios and hair salons and we are stockists for high-end makeup brands for example Mac, Kryolan, Sleek hair brands Milkshake, and Wella. You will be encouraged to participate in workshops with employers for example Kryolan makeup workshop. You will be able to take advantage of work placements. Previous examples include This Morning Live at the NEC, Scarefest in Gloucester and the Skills Show.

What will you need to bring?
