About the course

Are you a recent school leaver who wants to work in the health and social care sector? Do you have dreams of becoming a nurse, social worker, health care assistant or other health-related professional? This one-year Level 2 qualification covers the essential skills needed to progress to further learning to enhance your career options or to entry-level jobs within the industry.

This qualification covers essential areas, including, understanding the healthcare worker's role, communication skills in the health sector, personal development, health, safety, and security, as well as grasping quality standards and equality and diversity within the health sector. You will also continue to build your English and maths skills.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need either of the following: Grade 3 in both English and maths or a Grade 4 in either English or maths and a Grade 2/3 in the other.

Where can I progress next?

Successful completion of this course can see you advance into sector-specific employment at entry-level or further study with courses like T-Level Health, T-Level Education and Childcare, Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, Level 3 Technical Diploma in Childcare and Education, and Level 3 Support for Teaching and Learning.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees. Adults may be eligible for FREE tuition through the WMCA's free courses for jobs offer.

How will you learn?

The course is taught and assessed through a combination of theory and practical elements covering a range of skills and knowledge across the sector. Not only will you be taught practical skills in class, you will also have the opportunity to put these into practice during your yearlong placement in a relevant industry setting. This could include a care home, nursery or hospital.
