About the course

This one-year Level 2 qualification is for you if you are looking to start a career in the hairdressing industry. Whether you are a recent school leaver or an adult looking to retrain, this qualification covers all the core skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work at entry-level within the hairdressing industry. You will work with local employers who will contribute to the knowledge and delivery of training given by industry expert tutors in college. The college encourages students to participate in national competitions and events to improve skills and raise confidence. If you are an adult (19+) there is a part-time programme in which you will have more flexible models of delivery to support your training needs.

Mandatory areas include cutting women's hair, colouring and lightening hair, shampoo and conditioning, hairstyling, working in the industry, health and safety, and client consultation. Additionally, an optional area, depending on campus, demand, or credit value, may include perm and neutralise hair, creating themed images, promoting products and services, scalp massage, salon reception duties, and hair plaiting and twisting. If 16-18, you will continue to build your English and maths skills.

What are the entry requirements?

GCSE grade 2/E or above in English language* Entry Level 3 or above in Functional skills English* *If you do not have evidence of a recognised English qualification you will undertake an Initial Assessment at the start of your course to support you appropriately.

Where can I progress next?

Successful completion of this Level 2 course could see progression into entry-level employment, or you could increase your skills and boost your career options by taking other qualifications at Level 3.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees. How will you learn?

You will train in our purpose built hair salons at our Hall Green or Bournville (Longbridge) campuses. You will have the opportunity to attend external events including Salon International and Blackpool Winter Gardens. We also network with employers who demonstrate up-to-date and current industry methods and techniques to all our students.
