About the course

You will study this course in one academic year. You will work with local employers who will contribute to the knowledge and delivery of training - classes or lectures given by industry experts in college

We also benefit from our excellent partnerships with local and national hairdressing & barbering establishments. We urge our students to participate in national competitions and events to improve their skills and raise their confidence.?

Level 1 is ideal if you're just starting out in hairdressing and want an understanding of the industry - enough to succeed in a job in the area or to move on to further study.  At the end of this course, this qualification allows you to progress onto level 2. 

What are the entry requirements?

GCSE grade 1/F or above in English language*

Entry Level 3 or above in Functional skills English*

 * If you do not have evidence of a recoginsed English qualification you will undertake an Initial Assessment at the start of your course to support you appropriately.  

Where can I progress next?

You could progress into employment, whether this would be working as a junior stylist, or receptionist or you could progress onto further studies by taking other qualifications at Level 2. 



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees.
