About the course

This one-year Level 2 qualification is for adults who want to work with children between birth and five years, with knowledge of children up to seven years. The course aims to help you understand what makes good quality childcare. The course covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas including early years and social care, so you'll develop the skills you need to support you to progress onto Level 3 qualifications across a number of sectors.

You will cover a range of key concepts including child development, inclusive practice, legislation and policy, safeguarding, planning activities and play. You will also undergo a 250 hour placement in an early years and childcare setting where you will have to demonstrate your skills as an early year’s practitioner.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need 4 GCSEs at minimum grade 3 including English and maths, or Functional Skills Level 1 in English and maths.

Where can I progress next?

On successful completion of this qualification, you can progress onto a variety of Level 3 qualifications in Early Years Education or Supporting Teaching and Learning. Alternatively, if you wish to enter employment, you can apply for jobs as a qualified Level 2 early year’s practitioner. This can include working under supervision as a nursery practitioner, classroom assistant or pre-school practitioner.
