Apprenticeships

For Young People

Finally there is an answer to the problem of wanting to work but not having enough experience to get a job, and not being able to gain the experience without someone giving you a job first!

Traineeships are a new scheme which can help young people who have little or no work experience gain the experience employers are looking for, and they can lead to a paid employment. On a Traineeship programme you will undertake a work placement with an employer, getting hands-on skills and experience in the industry you are interested in working in. Alongside your work experience you'll also gain workplace skills at the college in key areas businesses expect from employees, and we'll show you how to go about applying for work.

Traineeships are unpaid and can last between six weeks up to a maximum of six months –it will vary on who you're working for and what industry you're in. And at the end of your Traineeship programme, you will have a guaranteed interview for a full time Apprenticeship vacancy with the employer, or other paid job vacancies within the business.

  • Go on a work placement in a role that you would like to pursue employment in so you gain hands-on experience that will get you job ready for the future
  • Learn job seeking skills such as how to write a CV, how to prepare for an interview, how to search for the right placement and work on your inter-personal skills
  • Work on transferable English and Math skills to help your employability

To be suitable for a Traineeship you must:

  • Be currently unemployed
  • Have little or no work experience already
  • Be aged between 16-23 and have not yet achieved a full Level 3

Traineeships are flexible for those who are claiming benefits so you'll still be able to receive Jobseeker's Allowance or the new Universal Credit whilst you're in the scheme.

For Employers

Traineeships were brought in by Government in August 2013 to offer young people a way of gaining the necessary skills and experience to gain employment and progress in their career. Traineeships are a work experience programme where young people aged between 16-24 who have little or no job place experience can work with an employer for six weeks to six months. Once a young person has completed a Traineeship with a business, they should be offered an interview for a paid Apprenticeship, a paid role within the business or an exit interview on their time within the business.

Traineeships offer a number of benefits to employers:

  • They can bring in enthusiastic young people with fresh ideas into your business
  • Allow businesses to create skilled workers for the industry
  • Support the local region and economy by helping your business to develop a loyal and talented workforce
  • Staff from your business will have the chance to develop their skills in mentoring and coaching
  • Get first pick of enthusiastic young people who are looking for employment. Effectively a 'try before you buy' system
  • If you decide after the scheme to offer a trainee an Apprenticeship you could be eligible for an Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of £1500
