Overview

This is for learners who would like to study for a Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Food preparation and Cooking (QCF) in the Hospitality and Catering Sector. You will be part of the foundation learning department and will have additional support from this team to support you whilst you are at college.

The hospitality and Catering team will teach you and help you start You will learn how to work well as part of a hospitality team and how to maintain a safe, secure and hygienic work environment. You will also learn about customer care, taking orders, dealing with payments and problem solving. As well as learning the basic skills you will be involved with production of a 3 course menu in a kitchen designed to match industry standards. In addition you will be involved in service 1 day a week in the lively restaurant, developing skills that could lead to a range of jobs in the sector.

Course description

Whilst you are on this course you will do theory classes learning the technical knowledge you need to go into the industry but you will also do practical skills in a fully equipped kitchen and restaurant

What areas will I study?

As well as learning about hospitality and catering, you will also develop your confidence, build your self-esteem, learn skills to work as a team and on your own initiative. You will have a personal tutor to support and guide you throughout the course with any issues you may have whilst at college. You may also be eligible for additional one to one or group support in class dependent upon your needs. You will also have the opportunity to explore and develop your employability and career pathway options. FUNCTIONAL SKILLS Functional Skills are a compulsory part of the course. Students set targets to improve their skills and gain qualifications, in English, Maths and/or IT. The Functional Skills and levels taken are based on initial assessment and previous GCSE results. There is a particular emphasis on skills required for level 1 NVQ Certificate in Food preparation and Cooking (QCF) Students build up a folder of evidence from their vocational work and may be required to sit one or more tests.
