The HND in Biomedical sciences for industry is a two year full-time course. This course is suitable for those who have a Level 3 science qualification and are looking to improve their practical skills to progress into employment or higher education.


You will develop the knowledge, understanding and practical laboratory skills associated with the Biological Sciences to progress into employment or further study. All students will also complete at least 100 hours of work experience. This course is taught through lectures, seminars and other forms of small group discussion, workshops, practical and fieldwork where applicable.

Assessments will take place throughout the course as reports, short exams and a portfolio of evidence.

This is a full time course which comprises of 12 hours of teaching and a 3 hour placement per week. In addition to this, students are expected to spend two days per week on private study. Classes are between the hours of 9am and 6pm. Full attendance and punctuality are a fundamental requirement.

Entry Criteria

You will need to be aged 18 years or over on or before 31 August of the academic year the course commences. You will need a minimum of 48 UCAS points which may be gained from the following qualifications:

  • Two A-levels at least one in a science subject
  • One A-level plus an AS level pass in an appropriate Science subject
  • A BTEC National Diploma or Extended Diploma in Science
  • A BTEC National Certificate in Science
  • A level 3 diploma or equivalent such as NVQ, GNVQ, International Baccalaureate, Scottish Certificate of Education
  • A recognised (Kite marked) access course in science.

A grade 'C' or above in GCSE maths and English or equivalent.

What Next

After successfully completing this course you could progress onto the third year of a top- up degree in a biological or nutritional science based programme. Alternatively you may choose to seek employment in the science industry. There is the opportunity to gain employment in a wide range of scientific careers including laboratory technician, pharmacy technician or biomedical scientist and higher apprenticeships.
