General English with Academic Skills
General English with Academic Skills is a course for students at Intermediate, Upper Intermediate or Advanced levels (IELTS 4.5 to 7.5, CEFR B1 to C1) who need to improve their English language and study skills quickly and effectively in order to progress to study at university, to successfully achieve their target IELTS band score or to access better employment opportunities.
You will improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as developing a range of the skills that you will need in higher education and in the world of work. Your teacher will monitor your progress closely and provide you with the personalised support that you need to support your development of academic skills, preparing you for further study.
As well as improving your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, you will develop your range of general and academic vocabulary and consolidate and extend your knowledge of grammar. In a wide range of classroom activities, you will practise and apply your skills in practical and useful contexts and situations.
Your teachers will guide you as you develop your accuracy and confidence when writing assignments, taking part in discussions, delivering presentations and talks and taking notes in lecture and other academic contexts.
We will provide you with the skills you need to achieve your target IELTS score and to be successful in university studies and in your future career.
Term dates are available on our website. Timetables may be subject to minor changes. Our maximum class size is 20 students though average class size is usually much smaller. Course length is dependent on your visa but we expect students to attend a minimum of 6 weeks.
Class times are Monday to Friday 09.15-12.15 and Monday & Tuesday 12.45-15.45
What areas will I study?
Your teachers will guide and advise you at each stage of your studies to make sure that you make the maximum progress in the shortest time possible.
This course continues to develop your general speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to a higher level whilst preparing you for vocational and academic study or career progression.
We will provide you with:
- An initial assessment to determine your starting point and to identify your personal strengths and weaknesses.
- An individual learning plan personalised to your individual needs which will include future personal targets and focuses on the main areas you need to improve.
- Regular assessments, tutorials and reviews to track your progress.
- Regular written progress reports.
- College Certificate following course completion which indicates your final level.
Your teachers are highly qualified and have extensive experience of supporting students in their preparation for IELTS exams, higher education studies and the world of work. They monitor your progress and well-being at each stage of your learning journey and are always available to provide you with useful feedback, encouragement and advice. Their role is to ensure that you make maximum progress in the shortest time possible in a positive and friendly study environment.
