Blue Thorn Technology started working with South and City College in July 2015 to try and find an apprentice CAD technicians to support their business. Blue Thorn is a 3D modelling specialist offering fully BIM-integrated coordination of construction projects.

Tracy Kerr, Business Consultant for South and City College recently visited Judy Davies at Blue Thorn, to talk through options when taking on an apprentice as well as course and recruitment options. Judy was pleased with the support she was offered, “Really helpful, the college did all of the advertising and screening”.

Samuel White, the newest apprentice at Blue Thorn Technologies secured his Level 3 apprenticeship after applying via the government website as he was looking for an opportunity to progress his skills and career in both Computer Aided Design and Building Services Engineering. Samuel said “I enjoy the learning environment and expanding my knowledge. The apprenticeship is everything I expected and I would advise anyone considering an apprenticeship to go for it as it is a good career choice”.

William Porter is a current Level 4 apprentice, also studying Building Services and an apprentice at Blue Thorn

Dave Grewcock, Samuel’s assessor is pleased with the progress he is making and the support offered to him by Blue Thorn as an employer. He said “Most of the organisations I work with benefit greatly from taking on an apprentice. Many construction companies are seeing an ageing workforce and struggle to find the skills they need for various jobs. Apprenticeships are great in helping in succession planning and growing the business. I would urge businesses to try it!”
