After months of closure, South & City College’s Elegance Hair Salon is reopening to the public on 14 July with stringent new safety measures in place. But yesterday saw the Longbridge campus salon open up for a special guest – BBC presenter Joanne Malin.

A professional, public hair salon, Elegance offers a broad range of hairdressing and makeover services for both men and women, with a team of stylists using professional product ranges including Milk Shake and Wella. But when COVID-19 hit, the salon was forced to close its doors.

Since then, the team has been busy implementing new safety measures for customers and staff in preparation for the reopening on 14 July. A full risk assessment is in place and safety requirements have been fulfilled in accordance with government guidelines. In addition, all salon staff have completed COVID-19 Barbicide training as well as the COVID-19 Infection Prevention & Control course, accredited by the Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists Ltd (the UK trade body for the hair and beauty industry).

Yesterday (9 July) staff were pleased to welcome Joanne Malin (BBC Midlands Today) through the doors. A salon regular and big supporter of the college, Joanne stopped by for her first post-lockdown haircut.

“After months of worrying about my hair, I felt very safe coming into the salon,” Joanne said. “All the staff did a fantastic job and I was delighted with the results.”

Under the new safety measures, staff working with Joanne were required to wear face masks, visors, aprons and gloves, and to keep a 2-metre distance between colleagues. Now, staff are looking forward to opening up for the public again.

Salon Manager Sukaina Walji said: “We have missed being able to offer our clients the treatments that we know they love, and we are looking forward to seeing you all again as soon as possible.”

Elegance Hair Salon re-opens to the public on 14 July, while the Serenity Beauty Salon will also re-open on Tuesday 21 July.  Walk-in appointments cannot be accepted and all bookings must be made by phone or email.
