About the course

You will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life. This course helps to develop knowledge and skills to work with uniformed public services. You will need to be able to cope with a programme of physical activity and provide a satisfactory reference regarding attendance, attitude to study and potential for development. You will be assessed throughout the course by assignments and coursework. You will also need to undertake an assessment which will be either a paper-based test, a set task, or an online exam.

This course has been designed for students to achieve a level 2 qualification over 2 years. It will give you the skills, discipline and knowledge needed for a career in the public services, including the police service, ambulance service, fire service and armed forces. You will study physical fitness, teamwork, map reading and more. From day one you will begin your training, taking part in adventurous activities and service related drills. You will participate in residential stays, activities and camping trips. What are the entry requirements?

You'll need two GCSEs grade 3-9 (A-D) including English and maths or a qualification in Public Services Level 1. You will also be required to have an interview.

Where can I progress next?

You could progress onto the BTEC Diploma in Public Services Level 3 course which is available at the college or seek employment within the public services.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees.
