About the course

This course is suitable for school leavers wanting a career in early years, primary, or teaching but not quite ready to study childcare at T Level. This course is for you if you would benefit from additional study time and preparation, before progressing to a T Level. The qualification will provide you with the knowledge and skills relating to the care and education of children aged 0-11 years 11 months.

You will cover a range of key concepts including child development, play and learning, exploring legislation, the role of the childcare practitioner, nutrition and physical development and physical activity. You will undertake around 200 placement hours in an early years and primary setting where you will have to demonstrate your skills as an early year’s practitioner. You will also study GCSE Maths or English if you have not previously achieved a minimum of Grade 4.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need minimum GCSE Grade 3 in English and maths or Functional Skills Level 1 in English and Maths.

Where can I progress next?

On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto a variety of Level 3 Qualifications in Early Years Education, Supporting Teaching and Learning or our T-Level Education and Childcare course. You need to have achieved a minimum of GCSE Grade 4 English and Maths to enrol on any of the above courses.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees.
