About the course

This one-year Level 1 course for adults will suit you if you are returning to education and new to the beauty industry. The course is designed as a transition into education and will support you to develop skills you need to progress to the more technical qualifications at a higher level. By choosing a career in this industry, you will have the opportunity to combine creativity with customer care; helping people to look and feel great.

You will gain skills in a range of areas including assisting in beauty treatments, as well as important customer service and communication skills, which will set you on the road to a successful career in the industry. You will also benefit from a range of enrichment activities to develop your skills further, these include trips and external speakers and visits from industry experts

What are the entry requirements?

You need to have achieved an ESOL Entry 3 Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. It would be an advantage to have some work experience within a hair and beauty salon.

Where can I progress next?

You could go on to study a Level 2 technical qualification in makeup or general beauty therapy at the college, sign up to an Apprenticeship or seek employment in the beauty industry at a basic level such as a trainee, assistant therapist or assistant receptionist



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees. How will you learn?

You will train in our purpose built salons using high street branded products and we are stockists of professional products such as Dermalogica, Elemis and Orly Nails. All our tutors are highly experienced beauty therapists that have expertise in all treatments, which will ensure you are able to offer services to a wide variety of clients.
