About the course

Are you a recent school leaver interested in computing such as coding, website development, databases, the Internet of Things, and cyber security? This one year introductory Level 2 course incorporates all the basic principles of computing, networks and software applications. The course will introduce you to a variety of IT careers to meet the changing technological world, preparing you for the workplace or progression to further education.

The range of modules provides variety and a suitable foundation for the digital industry to enable you to go on to take your first steps into employment or as a basis for further study on a full Level 2 qualification. You will study topics such as, using digital technologies, digital skills projects, emerging technologies, computer networks, and introduction to computer programming (software development).

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to have 4 GCSEs at Grade 2 including English and maths at Grade 2 in GCSE or Level 1 in Functional Skills or ESOL. You need to have a real interest in learning about IT or computing and computer science at this introductory level with a commitment to progressing on to study computing at higher levels with the aim of working in digital information technology in a huge variety of career pathways.

Where can I progress next?

You can progress to one of our full Level 2 courses in IT or computing or find entry level trainee employment in the field of IT. You may also consider an apprenticeship in IT and computing.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees.
