About the course

If you didn’t quite get the result you wanted for GCSE English at school, this one-year programme for adults, delivered from the Bournville campus in Longbridge, develops your skills in the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Improving your GCSEs, particularly English, will have a positive impact on your employment prospects or promotion opportunities within your organisation. It also opens doors to study at a higher level.

Achieving a GCSE in English language will mean you can read a diverse range of texts fluently and with comprehension. You'll develop critical reading skills, using insights gained from extensive reading to enhance your own writing. You'll demonstrate correct grammar usage, accurate punctuation, and spelling proficiency. Additionally, you'll improve your ability to listen to and comprehend spoken language, while effectively using spoken Standard English.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to have either:
• GCSE grade D or 3
•Functional Skills Level 2 Where this is not the case, an assessment of English skills, including spoken English, may be undertaken by a GCSE English specialist in order to determine your ability to complete the course.

Where can I progress next?

Many students go on to Access to Higher Education qualifications or other Level 3 courses, for the purpose of retraining or studying at university.
