About the course

Do you have an interest in Fashion & Photography? Has your dream job always been to work within the Fashion industry? Do you have a keen interest you wish to explore in Fashion and Photography? If yes, this is the course for you. The UK's Fashion industry is worth £26 billion & 800,000 jobs to the economy, making it the UK's largest creative industry. This exciting one-year Level 2 Diploma in Fashion & Photography will challenge you to develop an experimental & multi-disciplinary portfolio of work supportive of your own future goals and aspirations related to the following pathways, Fashion and Photography. We believe that Fashion is about storytelling through clothing; it's about the stories behind them and the ones you create around them whether that be through Fashion and Photography.

During your time on the course, you will explore a range of fun and exciting materials, techniques and processes related to the following pathways Fashion and Photography. in context to themes. You will document your work and review your practice on a one-going basis. The first part of the course will involve exploring the pathways and then you will specialise in a pathway that you wish to progress on to with us at SCCB next year at Level 3.

Throughout the duration of the course, you will go on trips to local and regional exhibitions to support the development of your work. You will take part in live competitions and work experiences with local employers to gain experience into how your chosen subject looks in context to the world of work. You will experience inspirational talks from guest speakers working within the industry currently. You will have the opportunity to be selected to showcase your work at our end of year exhibition and live events within the year. You will be able to collaborate with other learners from your course as well as other departments. You will be able to use our state of the art facilities and studio spaces adopting a multi-disciplinary approach to your creative practice. You will also benefit from progression talks with previous students and one to ones focusing on you and your aspirations.

What are the entry requirements?

To join this exciting course you will need:

  • A portfolio of past or current work you can bring to an interview

  • Commitment and enthusiasm for Fashion and Photography

You will also need to fulfil one of the criteria below:

  • Four GCSEs grade 3 or above including GCSE Art and Design

  • BTEC Introductory Diploma in Art (Distinction) or Merit grade plus 1 GCSE at grade 3

  • BTEC Introductory Certificate in Art (Merit or Distinction) plus at least 2 GCSEs at grade 3 or above

  • NCFE Level 1 Art and Design / NCFE Level 1 Interactive Media

Where can I progress next?

Successful completion of the course with a Merit or above can progress onto our Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion & Textiles or our Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion and Photography.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees.
