About the course

Are you aged 19 or above and interested in learning the basics of fashion, mastering industrial and domestic sewing machines, and creating garments? If so, our one-year Level 2 Fashion & Clothing Certificate at the Bordesley Green campus is ideal for you. This course challenges you to build a fashion portfolio relevant to the industry, exploring various basic technical skills aligned with your education progression. Supported by experienced industry professionals in fashion design, sewing, and garment construction, you'll also have opportunities to showcase your work at college shows.

The course teaches you the basic skills of design, textiles, and making clothes. You will learn basic skills related to the industry of fashion, and how to visualise them in context to job roles related to your future interests and education.

What are the entry requirements?

To join this exciting course you will need a commitment and enthusiasm for fashion, sewing, pattern cutting & garment construction. You will also need to fulfil one of the criteria below: Level 1 Functional Skills English We look forward to working with you and helping you to kick-start your creative journey here with us.

Where can I progress next?

Successful completion of the course will enable you to progress onto our Level 2 Diploma in Skills For The Fashion Industries or you could go into entry-level employment working in garment construction, as a design assistant or fashion retail.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees. Adults may be eligible for FREE tuition through the WMCA's free courses for jobs offer.
