About the course

This course not only teaches you skills, how to visualise but also how to focus on an area and realise progression goals related to your future interests and aspirations. This course is supportive to you from the outset, content as well as setting you up to progress onto one of our Level 3 courses. On this course you will be shown how to be experimental and developmental with your creativity in context to pathway related work. You will be supported by a team of industry professionals with lots of experience in the fields of art and design.

Do you have an interest in Art? Has your dream job always been to work within the art industry? Do you have a keen interest you wish to explore in art? If yes, this is the course for you. This exciting one-year Level 2 Diploma in Art at our Longbridge Campus will challenge you to develop an experimental & multi-disciplinary portfolio of work supportive of your own future goals and aspirations related to the following pathways Art, Illustration and design. During your time on the course, you will explore a range of fun and exciting materials, techniques and processes related to art and design, in context to themes. You will document your work and review your practice on a one-going basis. The first part of the course will involve exploring the pathways and then you will specialize in a pathway that you wish to progress on to with us next year at Level 3. Your specialist pathway work has the exciting opportunity to be showcased at our end of year exhibition and shows throughout the year. This course is designed to enable you to explore a range of fun skills and then specialize in an area that will then be supportive to secure your progression and career goals with us at Level 3 through the development of a professional portfolio of work you can be proud of to celebrate your creative journey with us on your Level 2.

What are the entry requirements?

To join this exciting course you will need:

  • A portfolio of past or current work you can bring to an interview

  • Commitment and enthusiasm for art

  • Four GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including GCSE Art or Design.

Where can I progress next?

Successful completion with a Merit or above means you can progress onto our Level 3 Art and Design course.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees.
