About the course

This 12-week Level 2 course is designed for adults (aged 19 and above) aspiring to pursue careers in music production, studio engineering, or live sound. Held at the Digbeth campus, it offers comprehensive training in various music production skills. The course is highly practical, allowing you to refine your music production techniques through sequencing and production in our Mac sequencing suites and professional recording studios. Live sound techniques are taught in our 350-seat auditorium, The Crossing, which hosts a wide range of artists, from college students to visiting performers like award-winning artist Tom Walker.

You will study a variety of areas which include music sequencing, remixing and production, music arranging and studio mixing. You will have the opportunity to learn how to create music using a DAW and record in the music studio. You will also study an essential digital skills qualification to support your digital skills.

What are the entry requirements?

Students wishing to apply for the course will be interviewed and previous skills and experiences taken into account. In addition, it is expected you will have the following qualifications:
• Minimum of Level 1 Functional Skills in English
• 3 GCSEs at grade 3
• Level 1 qualification in music or any other subject

Where can I progress next?

Successful completion of this course and depending on your skills and previous qualifications, you may be eligible to progress to a Level 3 music production course to further your knowledge. Or you can progress to employment or an apprenticeship in the music industry.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees. How will you learn?

The course is very practical and hands-on. Live sound techniques are taught in our 350-seat auditorium (The Crossing), operating Midas Pro 2 and Avid Profile consoles and 64-track Pro Tools recording. Music production is taught in Mac sequencing suites and recording studios.
