About the course

Are you a recent school-leaver not quite ready for a T Level at Level 3, and have a passion for making things and using machines? There's never been a more exciting time to become an engineer! Sectors you could find yourself working in include aerospace, automotive, transport and many more.

You'll learn how to use a wide range of mechanical engineering machinery such as manual and CNC lathes, milling machines, grinders and many more. You'll also develop your manual bench-work skills. Combine this with the underpinning theory you'll learn, after finishing this course you'll be in a great position to progress to Level 3, secure an apprenticeship or go into employment.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to have achieved both GCSE English language and maths at Grade 4/C or above. All students will also be required to attend and satisfactorily complete a formal induction period.

Where can I progress next?

On successful completion of this programme, you will be eligible to apply for our Level 3 T-Level in Engineering and Manufacturing. You can also progress onto Advanced Apprenticeships or directly into entry-level employment.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees. How will you learn?

You will experience an interactive way of learning. Practical and experimental classes offer you hands-on experience to complement your course's more theoretical modules, while innovative design-build-test projects replace the more traditional lesson and lab sessions. You will also have the opportunity to attend talks from engineers who work at companies such as Bentley Motors and ZF TRW.
