About the course

Are you a recent school leaver interested in taking the first steps into the dynamic world of construction? This Level 2 course is a step towards becoming a competent and qualified electrician. Being an electrician in the construction industry requires a significant level of responsibility, as strict safety regulations must be adhered to. The course has been designed to deliver a high level of occupational skills and provides a platform from which to progress to further learning, an apprenticeship programme or into entry-level employment.

The qualification will give you understanding of the skills needed within the electro-technical sector. Mandatory aspects covered include health and safety in building services engineering, principles of electrical science, electrical installations technology, installation of wiring systems and enclosures, and understanding how to communicate with others within building services engineering.

What are the entry requirements?

C&G Electrical Installation Level 1 and GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above, or GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above if joining from Year 11

Where can I progress next?

Upon completion of this qualification, you can advance to the Level 3 Electro-technical City & Guilds 8202 Advanced Technical Diploma in Electrical Installations. Another pathway is through an Electrical Apprenticeship, studying the Level 3 Electro-technical City & Guilds 5357 qualification. Alternatively, you can pursue an Electrical Apprenticeship focused on studying the Level 3 Electro-Technical City & Guilds 5393 Domestic Electrician qualification.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. How will you learn?

Our centre has full-scale workshops, where you will be taught by qualified, experienced staff that have all had industry-based experience within their vocational areas. There is a mix of practical, tutorials and classroom work, however due to the nature of the construction industry, this is a hands-on course which is predominantly delivered in a practical format.
