About the course

This is a two-year Level 3 Public Services extended diploma course that is suitable for recent school-leavers and adults. It is a practical, work-related course for those who are interested in learning more about the public services. You may be wanting to pursue a career in the police, fire service, the military or prison service. A career in the uniformed services will see you never having two days the same, and our course will prepare you to expect the unexpected.

Students gain an understanding of how government procedures impact roles within the sector together with investigating factors related to crime, the legal and law system in the UK. Also, students participate in adventurous outdoor activities, including expedition and land navigation skills, to enhance practical knowledge and develop team work and leadership skills. Guest speakers often visit from the Army, Navy and the Police to give students the benefits of their experience in the sector.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need: Level 2 BTEC Public Services at Merit or Distinction and maths and English at Grade 4 or 4 GCSEs grade 9-4 including maths and English

Where can I progress next?

Successful completion of the course can see you move onto university level courses or employment. Opportunities are available into a wide range of public sector occupations in both the uniformed and non-uniform sectors such as local government administration, customs and excise, the police or fire service, the armed forces, the military police, security or the prison service.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees.
