About the course

Are you a recent school leaver wanting to learn a practical trade in construction but not sure which one is the right choice for you? Whether you are thinking about becoming a plasterer, painter and decorator, carpenter or bricklayer, this multi-skills course gives a broad introduction to a range of trades while keeping your options open to specialise and progress for further study at Level 2. Based at our Bordesley Green campus, in full-scale workshops, with full-scale workshops, equipped with professional quality tools and qualified tutors that have plenty of industry based experience within their vocational areas.

Acquire basic construction techniques in plastering, painting and decorating, carpentry and bricklaying, together with how to work safely, problem-solving, teamwork, and essential communication skills. Maths and English are also integrated into the programme.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no entry requirements other than an interest in learning more about construction with a view to working in the industry.

Where can I progress next?

Upon passing this qualification and securing English and maths, you could progress on to study brickwork, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating, or plastering at Level 2. Alternatively, you could work towards a general construction skills course in order to move into construction management.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees. How will you learn?

There is a mix of practical, tutorials and classroom work, however due to the nature of the construction industry, this is a hands-on course which is predominantly delivered in a practical format.
