About the course

Whether you are a recent school-leaver or an adult, this course will give you intermediate skills as a painter and decorator. Our fully equipped painting and decorating workshops provide the perfect setting for your development, and our tutors will use their wealth of industry experience to help you become competent in this trade. Throughout the course you will also have the opportunity to showcase your skills at a number of events, including the Skill Build competition, and benefit from a possible apprenticeship through the fantastic links we have with local employers. You will also have the opportunity to work on college projects with external companies through our dedicated renovations team.

At this level you will develop your skills in specialist decorative and painting finishes, from sanding down paintwork and stripping old wallpaper to installing ceiling mouldings you will learn how to carry out a range of advanced techniques and skills. Wallpapering, broken colour effects, textured finishes and using spraying guns are just a few examples of the skills you will develop.

What are the entry requirements?

You’ll need to have completed the Diploma in Painting & Decorating Level 1 or to have some relevant site experience which would need to be demonstrated to the tutor.

Where can I progress next?

To enhance your skills, consider pursuing a Level 3 in Painting and Decorating or explore an apprenticeship. With increased experience, you may opt for self-employment or pursue training for supervisory or managerial roles.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees. How will you learn?

Our centre has full-scale workshops, where you will be taught by qualified, experienced staff that have all had industry-based experience within their vocational areas. There is a mix of practical, tutorials and classroom work, however due to the nature of the construction industry, this is a hands-on course which is predominantly delivered in a practical format.
