About the course

This is a basic introductory course covering the practical and job related knowledge required for a career in painting and decorating. This course is aimed at school leavers or at those wishing to enter the construction industry for the first time. The Diploma Level 1 gives a good grounding in the trade with progression available to Level 2.

You will learn the basics of painting and decorating such as, choosing the correct tools and equipment, correct preparation of surfaces and applying paint using the correct brush and roller techniques. Our fully equipped painting and decorating workshops provide the perfect setting for your introduction into this varied and skilled trade. As part of the course (16-18 years old only) you will continue to study maths and English alongside your vocational qualification.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry criteria for this course, however if you are aged 16-19 and have not achieved GCSE maths and English to Grade 4, you will study for these alongside this qualification.

Where can I progress next?

On successful completion you may apply to continue your studies in Painting and Decorating at Level 2.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. How will you learn?

There is a mix of practical, tutorials and classroom work, however due to the nature of the painting and decorating industry, this is a hands-on course which is predominantly delivered in a practical format.
