About the course

Are you a recent school leaver or someone eager to step into the dynamic world of construction? Carpenters are in short supply in the industry, they are in demand and are an integral part of any building firm. This Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery course covers a range of skills for wood related crafts. Through hands-on, practical learning, it will prepare you for further learning or entering employment in construction or bench joinery. This course is perfect for those passionate about the construction industry and aspire to master a specialised trade. Under the guidance of our expert tutors, you'll not only acquire essential woodworking knowledge but also practical skills. From basic woodworking joints and the use and maintenance of tools, to problem-solving, fostering teamwork, and communication skills, this course gives you the start you need for a successful career path in construction.

This course will introduce you to using tools such as saws, planes, and chisels to how to understand working drawings and types of structures. You will also learn key construction topics such as health and safety, problem-solving, teamwork, and essential communication skills, alongside other transferable skills to prepare you for the workplace. For 16-18-year-olds, maths and English are integrated into the programme. Work experience support is provided for relevant placements.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry criteria for this course, however if you have not achieved your maths and English to Grade 4, you will study for these alongside your course. Employers are looking for construction employees who have their maths and English, it is important for your future that you do all that you can to achieve it.

Where can I progress next?

Upon passing this qualification and securing English and maths, you can advance to further study at Level 2, an apprenticeship or entry-level careers in the industry.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. How will you learn?

There is a mix of practical and classroom work, however due to the nature of the construction industry, this is a hands-on course which is predominantly delivered in a practical format. Work experience is a vital part of the course and you will be supported in finding a relevant work placement to supplement your learning. The college regularly competes at regional and national competitions, and you will have the opportunity to showcase your skills as part of our competition squad.
