About the course

Are you a recent school leaver or someone eager to step into the dynamic world of construction and bricklaying? Then this Level 2 course could be for you. Bricklaying is one of the most important trades in the industry and the building you will work on will stand for many years. With state-of-the-art workshops, equipped with professional quality tools, you will be learning in an environment which simulates a real-life building site. With a shortage of good quality bricklayers, why not join our course to give you the skills and opportunity to gain a well-paid trade.

This qualification covers mandatory modules including principles of building construction, information and communication, health, safety, and welfare in construction, techniques for building solid walling, isolated and attached piers, interpreting working drawings to set out masonry structures, and lessons in maths and English if you are 16-18.

What are the entry requirements?

Level 2 Entry Criteria You must have achieved Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying. Evidence of previous work or a commitment to study may be required. Work Experience is a vital part of the course and you will be supported in finding a work placement relevant to your study If you have not achieved your Maths and English to Grade 4, you would have to do this. Employers are looking for bricklayers who have their Maths and English. It is important for your future that you do all that you can to achieve it.

Where can I progress next?

On successful completion we recommend progressing on to the Diploma in Brickwork Level 3, or find employment or an apprenticeship as a bricklayer.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. How will you learn?

Our centre has full-scale workshops, where you will be taught by qualified, experienced staff that have all had industry-based experience within their vocational areas. There is a mix of practical, tutorials and classroom work, however due to the nature of the construction industry, this is a hands-on course which is predominantly delivered in a practical format.
