About the course

Have an interest in travelling? Fancy a career as a travel agent or working at airport? This Level 2 one year course will develop your knowledge of the travel, tourism and aviation industries. There are separate classes for 16-18 year olds and for adults. You will study a range of different modules and take part in various visits and talks to advance your learning about the industry. You will establish customer service skills and experience various airport processes.

Some of the modules covered include the UK travel and tourism sector, international tourism destinations, marketing travel and tourism products, airline and airports, aviation security, and how to support passengers with special requirements. You will have the opportunity to take part in UK day visits, industry workshops and a residential trip (UK or overseas), as well as take part in industry work experience opportunities, such as the Holiday Inn Hotel Takeover or work at the Burlington Hotel.

What are the entry requirements?

To study on this programme, you will need four GCSEs at Grade 3/D (one of which should be English Language), or a full Level 1 vocational qualification and pass an English assessment.

Where can I progress next?

The tourism and aviation industry has a wide range of employment opportunities. These include jobs in cabin crew, airline customer service, hotels, tour operators and travel agents, tourist attractions, conferences and events, hospitality and entertainment. We would recommend progressing to a Level 3 travel and tourism course open further career opportunities.

Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees.
