About the course

Are you a recent school leaver looking to become a fully qualified motor vehicle technician/ mechanic at a rapid pace? This intensive, fast-track course will develop your skills and understanding of the modern light vehicle. It has been specifically designed for learners who have achieved a grade 4 and above in English and maths GCSE and have a very good understanding of automotive technology with excellent mechanical ability. It is an intensive, fast paced yet rewarding course to get you to the next level sooner.

You will gain skills and knowledge in health, safety, supporting working relationships, materials, fabrication, tools, and measuring devices in the automotive environment. Additionally, routine light vehicle maintenance, removing and replacing combustion engine units, mechanical, lubrication, and cooling systems, as well as fuel, ignition, air, and exhaust systems are addressed. The course also covers transmission, driveline units, chassis components, and electrical units in light vehicles.

What are the entry requirements?

Due to advances in technology within the automotive industry it is important to recognise the complexity of the modern motor vehicle. With this qualification, we are looking for a learner that can demonstrate excellent mechanical comprehension, mechanical ability, and the willingness to learn. A very good understanding of the technology involved in the modern light vehicle. Learners must hold GCSE's in English, Maths and a Technology/engineering discipline. Don't worry, if you do not hold these qualifications, your journey will start with the Level 1 Light Vehicle Maintenance course which is designed to develop mechanical skills as well as developing the necessary core English and Maths skills needed to progress to the level 2 Diploma course. If this is the case, please initially apply for the Level 1 Light vehicle course and discuss with your tutor your career path.

Where can I progress next?

After successfully completing this intensive course, you will naturally progress to the Level 3 Diploma which will advance your understanding of the skills and knowledge you would have built during the level 2 and will look in more detail into the systems on the modern vehicle.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. You will learn in our specialist automotive workshops at either Bordesley Green or Bournville (Longbridge) campus. The course is taught and assessed through a combination of theory and practical elements covering a range of skills and knowledge across the sector.
