About the course

This one-year qualification is for you if you are a school-leaver looking to start a career in the maintenance of motor vehicles. You will gain the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to start a career as a mechanic/ technician in the motor vehicle service and repair industry. Achieving this introductory automotive qualification gives you the background knowledge you need to be able to advance onto a Level 2 or Level 3 course or an apprenticeship. Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success on your course, your chosen vocation and life in general. Throughout the course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes.

The course covers various study modules essential for understanding motor vehicle mechanics. These include chassis & construction, engines, starting & charging systems, service & repair techniques, steering & suspension mechanisms, wheels & tyres, as well as vehicle lighting & electronics. Each module delves into specific aspects crucial for understanding and working with automotive technology and maintenance.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no specific entry requirements, however you will undertake an assessment in English and maths.

Where can I progress next?

You could progress on to the Level 2 course or consider an apprenticeship.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. Higher Education: If you are planning to undertake one of our Higher Education courses you can apply for a loan with Student Finance England, or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with the college to support towards your course fees.
