About the course

This A Level equivalent Music course is a full-time, two-year programme for students aged 16+. It has UCAS points widely recognised by universities and employers. Designed for those who would like to explore their options of a career in the music industry as either a performer, composer, or within music studio production and music events. The course will focus on developing your music performance skills as part of an ensemble and as a solo musician, or the route of music production and events is designed for anyone that isn't a musician but would still like to be a part of the music industry. Over 70% of those who come to view our music facilities end up studying with us. This qualification should be taken alongside two other A Level subjects and depending on your future career plans, it sits well alongside other humanities and arts subjects.

The units you study will depend on the route you choose: music performance and composition (you need to be able to play an instrument to basic level or be a vocalist); music production and live events (you do not need to play an instrument for this however you must show your enthusiasm to succeed in the subject).

What are the entry requirements?

5 GCSEs grades 4 or above, to include English at grade 5 or above. A successful audition will be required.

Where can I progress next?

Successful completion of this course can see you can progress to study music and other courses at Higher Education level or enter the world of employment. Possible job roles include: professional musician/performer, music producer, sound engineer/recording engineer, film/TV composer or music teacher.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA. How will you learn?

The course will be delivered in a very practical and vocational way. As well as group lessons and discussions, this course involves developing your practical skills, exploring the music industry and focussing on preparing for a career in music. You will have lessons on music theory and composition, using state of the art equipment and industry specialised software.
